The existing hardwood surface is prepared for professional finish application using practices intended to support proper adhesion and lasting protection.
4. Apply the Protective Finish
A fresh finish is professionally applied to renew the protective surface and help your existing hardwood continue performing as it should.
Frequently Asked Questions
Have questions? We’ve got answers. Here are some of the most common things homeowners ask about our in-home consultation process, products, and installation.
Will recoating make an old hardwood floor look new?
Recoating can noticeably improve a dull floor and renew its protective sheen, but it does not remove deep scratches, stains, dents, or damage within the wood. The outcome depends on the condition beneath the existing finish.
Is recoating the same as refinishing?
No. Recoating prepares the existing finish and adds a new protective layer over it. Refinishing sands away the old finish and exposes the wood so deeper wear can be corrected and a new stain can be applied.
Can a different stain color be added during recoating?
Recoating is intended to maintain the current floor color. A substantial color change generally requires sanding the hardwood to expose the natural wood before applying a different stain.
What happens if parts of the floor are worn to bare wood?
Recoating alone is typically not suitable when bare or gray wood is visible. Those areas may absorb finish differently and remain noticeable. Refinishing or restoration may be needed to create an even result.
