Laminate flooring is one of the most popular budget-friendly choices in Missoula homes, and modern laminate is far better than the plasticky product many people remember from the early 2000s. But laminate covers a wide quality range, and the difference between a bargain-bin box and a well-built plank shows up fast in a busy household. Here is what to know before you buy.
What laminate actually is
Laminate is a layered product: a dense fiberboard core, a high-resolution printed image of wood on top, and a clear, hard wear layer sealing the surface. That wear layer is what makes good laminate so scratch-resistant - it stands up to dog nails, dropped toys, and dragged chairs better than many real wood floors.
What laminate is not is real wood or waterproof vinyl. It cannot be sanded and refinished, and while many newer laminates are water-resistant, the fiberboard core means most are less forgiving of standing water than luxury vinyl plank.
Where laminate makes sense
Laminate is a strong value pick for bedrooms, living rooms, hallways, and home offices - dry, everyday rooms where you want the look of wood without the cost. Its scratch resistance makes it especially popular with pet owners and families. For entryways, mudrooms, and full bathrooms that see regular water, waterproof luxury vinyl plank is usually the safer call.
Laminate vs. luxury vinyl plank
These two get compared constantly because they overlap on price and wood-look style. The short version: laminate tends to feel a touch more like real wood underfoot and often has crisper embossing, while LVP is fully waterproof and better for wet rooms. If a space stays dry, quality laminate is a great value. If water is a real risk, lean vinyl.
What to check before you buy
- AC rating: this measures abrasion resistance. AC3 is fine for most homes; AC4 or higher is worth it for high-traffic areas and pets.
- Core and thickness: thicker planks (around 10 to 12 mm) feel more solid and quiet underfoot than thin budget boards.
- Water resistance: if you want laminate anywhere near moisture, choose a product rated water-resistant and confirm what that rating actually covers.
- Attached underlayment: many quality laminates include a pad that improves sound and comfort and simplifies installation.
- Texture and finish: matte, textured surfaces read as real wood far better than glossy ones.
The subfloor and installation matter
Laminate is a floating floor - the planks click together and rest over an underlayment rather than being nailed or glued down. That makes installation cleaner, but it also means the subfloor has to be flat and dry. Skip the flatness prep and you get soft spots, clicking, and gaps at the seams. Correct expansion gaps around the edges are just as important, especially in Montana where seasonal humidity swings make every floating floor want to move.
